Closing the Math Gap: How the Math Acceleration After School Program is Helping Dawes Students Excel

At Dawes Elementary School, second-grade teacher Jaqueline Petrof has been on a mission to help students build confidence and close gaps in their math skills through her Math Acceleration After School Program. Thanks to generous support from Foundation 65, this targeted initiative served 26 students, many of whom were one or two grade levels behind in math proficiency at the start of the year.

Focusing on What Matters: Data-Driven Support
The program uses the iReady Math diagnostic assessments to identify students with the greatest needs—regardless of race, language status, or background. By focusing solely on academic need, the program creates an equitable space where every child has the chance to accelerate their learning. Throughout the year, students engaged in math games and activities tailored to the standards they had not yet mastered, with progress monitored and instruction adjusted regularly based on assessment data.

A Safe and Supportive Learning Environment
One unique feature of the program is the one-on-one support provided by ETHS volunteers, high school students committed to helping younger learners. Each student was paired with a consistent volunteer, fostering trusting relationships that created a safe space for learning and normalized seeking help. This approach not only advanced math skills but also supported students’ social and emotional well-being.

Impressive Growth and Measurable Outcomes
By the end of the program year, nearly all students made significant progress. Where 65% of participants started two grade levels below in math, only one student remained at that level at year’s end. More than half advanced to grade level, and 96% demonstrated measurable gains—an achievement that highlights the power of focused, individualized support.

Collaborating for Community Impact
The program also strengthened community ties by engaging ETHS students who earn community service hours through their volunteer work. The year culminated in a celebratory event where students, families, volunteers, and teachers gathered to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of the learners.

Looking Ahead
Ms. Petrof is ready to create even more impact.  This winter she launched a 1st grade math group so that she can help students earlier on in their academic journey.  Next year she plans to add a literacy component for first graders. With the help of Foundation 65, she is going to build on what works!

A Message of Gratitude
Ms. Petrof reflects, “I am eternally grateful to Foundation 65 for allowing me to run my dream program. We normalized the need for support and encouraged students to seek help without fear. Last year, 96% of students made significant gains, moving from kindergarten to second-grade math levels. It’s truly rewarding to see their growth.”
