Black SonRISE: Empowering Young Black Men to Rise with Purpose and Pride
At the heart of our community lies an incredible opportunity to nurture the potential of our young Black boys and biracial youth, helping them grow into confident, engaged leaders of tomorrow. The Black SonRISE program, supported by Foundation 65 and valued community partners, is doing just that—creating a safe, inspiring space where 100 students from Evanston’s District 65 schools can connect, learn, and rise together.
A Vision Rooted in Empowerment
Black SonRISE is driven by three key goals:
To nurture a love of reading and literacy.
To raise awareness of the rich, inspirational legacy of the African diaspora.
To foster interest in meaningful life opportunities and purposeful careers.
Through a dynamic curriculum delivered in fall and spring sessions, Black SonRISE explores important themes that speak directly to Risers’ experiences and futures. In the fall, they focus on civic engagement and leadership, teaching what it means to be a leader in one’s community and how youth can shape collective futures. The spring sessions highlight the pathways to manhood—emphasizing accountability, integrity, and preparation for becoming the men they aspire to be.
Building Community, Belonging, and Leadership
Black SonRISE cultivates camaraderie and belonging by providing a safe space where participants can be their authentic selves. The program is completely free, ensuring no financial barriers limit participation.
Local partnerships with organizations like Camp Kuumba and the YMCA have strengthened its impact, offering field trips and real-world connections with community leaders and business owners. These experiences have even led to apprenticeship opportunities, opening doors for practical learning beyond the classroom.
Measurable Growth and Community Impact
Teachers, parents, and the Risers themselves have shared powerful testimonials about increased engagement, improved classroom participation, and greater confidence both at school and at home. This program is not only transforming individual lives but creating ripples of positive change throughout the Evanston community.
